Making Rope

Making rope the old-fashioned way with the help of this device. Leaning against the post in the right rear is a section of hibiscus trunk, with its fibrous bark peeled back.

The raw materials: shredded, fibrous bark from a native hibsicous tree.

The final product: A well-made length rope.

Three strands of smaller rope, which have already been braided using this machine, are now attached in preparation for making a heavier rope. Traditional master Tun Ignacio Taimanglo demonstrates, with help from Joe Quinata and Sherey Taimanglo.

Turning the cranks at both ends winds the three strands together. Sherey slides a piece of deer antler along at the point where the strands entwine, to keep a firm pressure that makes for a tight weave..
