14 DEAD LISTED AT KAUAI |
|
A Red Cross report received from Kauai at 10 this morning places two names of the Kauai missing on the list of known dead and so changes the total dead figure to 14 and the missing at 4.
Three truckloads of Red Cross supplies were taken into Haena today by rescue squads. They found the Haena area completely devastated except for the two story Mahikoa house, the school and teachers' cottages and by a fluke, the yardman's house on the Paul Rice property. |
Houses demolished on the Haena beach included all of Camp Naue, the YMCA camp and those of George Brown, William H. Rice, Paul G. Rice, Mrs. Dora Isenberg, William Chandler, Y.P. Nishimoto, Mrs. Hallie Lydgate, Edwin Kaamea, Mrs. Mae Hanohano and the county pavilion. At Haena point, the Francis Brown house was untouched but the garage and servants quarters were smashed. At Wainiha the freak waters tore Antone Dutra residence from its foundations and carried it 300 feet across the road. The water also carried the home of Henry Kai Fook 350 feet from its foundations. . |
