Wai‘oli Mission House: Church

Church

Wai‘oli Hui‘ia Church, Hanalei.

"Wai‘oli Hui‘ia Church of Hanalei is a separate entity from the Wai‘oli Mission House Museum," Roger points out. "After the death of Lucy and Abner in 1869, Albert stayed here sporadically from 1869-1877. Then he went to run a sugar plantation in Hanamaulu, and the property stayed mostly dormant. But during that time, he purchased the interest in the mission station from each of his brothers. After his death in 1919, the sisters purchased the property from his widow at market value.

"The field east of the Mission House is leased to the county for a dollar a year, so the kids can play soccer. So it’s all shared by all of us now. But they have church services every Sunday and Wednesday night there and they ring the bell every Sunday. If you get married there, you get to ring the bell."

"And it’s on Sunday the kids usually ring it a couple of times. But Hurricane Iniki came here in 1992, September 11, and picked up the church and put it back down. It broke many of the stained-glass panes on the windows, so many had to be replaced, which is very hard to do. It’s been restored, it’s going great now.

"The main table in the front of the church came from the tree—it’s called a true kamani tree and it was planted by George Wilcox around 1855. Around 2007, a wind and rain storm took down a large portion of that tree. That is where the wood came from that was used to make the table in the church."

Bell Tower

Bell tower behind the meeting hall.

"The bell in the bell tower behind the meeting hall was cast in 1840. It came around the Horn for the mission, and when the green church was built in 1912, the bell was removed from the bell tower and moved into the green church, so it’s the same bell—it’s been ringing for all these years."
