Waioli Mission House: Pantry
|
"This bottom shelf the granddaughters kept separate from the other items that had been donated throughout the years. On the top left is the Boston Tea Party—painted on that little teapot. The china is of the Blue Willow variety from Canton. Yhere are a lot of cruets on the top shelf, these date from 1934, the hundred-year anniversary of Alexander's arrival here. Many family members who came to attend brought cruets. "The china on the shelf underneath the teacups (second shelf) is Chelsea china from England. Refrigerator still works, from 1933—Ms. Mable bought it brand new. I plug it in every year, run it for 8 hours, get it nice and cold, defrost it."

"This is a food safe. Alexander had put these huge sheets of zinc on for the roofing. When Abner arrived, the nails had rusted and the roof had started to leak. So he tore them off and replaced them with shingles. "But he was a real stickler for reusing things. So he recylced the zinc and constructed this food safe (also called a pie safe) to keep the rats and cockroaches out of it. To keep the ants out, they put water or kerosene into into those cups below the feet of the safe." |
