The Pacific Worlds Project has worked in partnership with Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) and its regional offices in Micronesia, as well as in conjunction with the Hawaii Geographic Alliance, the Center for Pacific Island Studies (University of Hawaii, Manoa), and the Native Hawaiian Education Association to host teacher workshops in the American-Pacific region. Our workshops are intended to serve two purposes. The first is to provide an integrated teaching package that utilizes Pacific Worlds resources for teaching about Hawai‘i and the Pacific with an indigenous-values approach. Emphasis is given to understanding Indigenous Geographies as cultural systems to be understood in their own terms, and to cross-cultural comparison between island locales and between indigenous and "Western" ways of knowing. Workshop modules are being specifically tailored to address Hawai‘i DOE standards for History and Geography. Specific types of lesson plans and exercises can be found in our curricular materials. Second, the workshops also introduce teachers to data collection and website compilation methodologies. While teachers may not actually build their own websites, the data collection process on their own local areas is one ready project they may employ with their students. Use the links at the right to read participant feedback from the workshops that have been held to date.
